styclecircle: prefix, the book 06 launch

Role: Director of Events
March 25, 2021

As the Director of Events, I lead a team consisting of 5 events coordinators and a sponsorship coordinator for the StyleCircle 20/21 team. In this role, I not only managed my own team, but I also worked with the rest of the Executive Team to lead our team of over 50 members. I was also responsible for budgeting all events-related finances and pitching for funds from several Toronto Metropolitan University organisations, as well as hiring external collaborators for the launch.

The Book launch is our most anticipated event of the year and this year, the 6th issue occurred online as a result of COVID-19. Due to our inability to execute an in-person event, we created our own launch website filled with online exhibits by the StyleCircle Events Team which were extensions of select articles from the 6th issue, as well as live performances by three Toronto artists. Other features included the Team Playlist and the #StyleCircleFitChallenge. On March 25th, we livestreamed the launch on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. To learn more, visit stylecircle.org

Embodied Practices of Queerness

“Embodied Practices of Queerness” is an editorial that discusses how the writer, Samantha Cass, engages with ear piercings in a way that imparts queer narratives. She talks about how her piercings are a way that she subverts what is expected of her bodily appearance by the heteronormative society and is how the act of body modifications is practiced by many queer people, as well as an identifier. To Sam, her “piercings still hold for [her] a permanent commitment to queer aesthetics and the desire to be visibly queer to this day.” Featuring two queer individuals, Tayler Gardner and Molly Steels, the film discusses the significance of body modifications on queer identities; they discuss how they practice queerness and set their own narratives through their body modifications.

The Toll of Isolation

“The Toll of Isolation,” is a personal essay written by Erica Weekes that explores the impacts of how social isolation has affected her life more deeply than she would have imagined prior to the start of the pandemic. Conceptualised by Danica Hooper, the film captures the alienation of oneself and sheds light on the struggles of depression and anxiety in a quarantined setting through contemporary dance. The repetition of endless chores is a tiring endeavour and the toll of isolation is only amplified by a constant ticking–a reminder that time will pass and there’s no stopping it.
